Something Is Happening

Something is Happening

HOW SWEET!!!
This is the first time I've brought along other people besides my husband to opening night. It made my experience much more enjoyable! Lydiah AKA "Ms. Horror" loved being able to see herself up on the wall. You could tell she was so proud of herself, which in turn, made me really appreciate what I created even more.

I really used the prompt of this project to really push my boundaries to see what I would end up with. In the end, I created something that I constantly refer to as "disgustingly awesome." I had so much fun and really connected to my artwork through Photoshopping the pictures, creating a book and putting together my final prints for the art show.

Auditory Limitations

I decided to create a soundscape based on my hearing loss. I had my husband read a passage on page 117 from McLuhan’s THE MEDIUM IS THE MASSAGE that intrigued me. As someone who has a hearing loss, McLuhan mentions that “we feel more secure when things are visible, when we can see for ourselves” in my case, this statement rings true.

I toyed with Garageband’s EQ settings in order to capture what my hearing loss sounds like. I reduced the decibel levels to the lowest available setting which was 30 decibels. To put it in perspective, my hearing loss goes beyond that, it bottoms out around 50 decibels. So I was only able to create a mild stimulation of what my hearing loss is like.

I wanted my soundscape to be a thought provoking experience that places limitations on people and forces them to have an intentional kind of experience.

Welcome to Prime Time, Bitch!
