Auditory Limitations

I decided to create a soundscape based on my hearing loss. I had my husband read a passage on page 117 from McLuhan’s THE MEDIUM IS THE MASSAGE that intrigued me. As someone who has a hearing loss, McLuhan mentions that “we feel more secure when things are visible, when we can see for ourselves” in my case, this statement rings true.

I toyed with Garageband’s EQ settings in order to capture what my hearing loss sounds like. I reduced the decibel levels to the lowest available setting which was 30 decibels. To put it in perspective, my hearing loss goes beyond that, it bottoms out around 50 decibels. So I was only able to create a mild stimulation of what my hearing loss is like.

I wanted my soundscape to be a thought provoking experience that places limitations on people and forces them to have an intentional kind of experience.

  1. This sounds like a great piece. Could you please post a link to it? I'd really love to hear this! This is in my interest at the moment as I'm also working on a project that forces the spectator to experience a certain way of life. It's really amazing how powerful you can be as an artist with this sort of piece. Can't wait to hear it!
